Getting to the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix — Montreal Insider Travel Tips

The Canadian Grand Prix is one of the most anticipated events on the Formula 1 calendar — and not just for the race. Montreal comes alive with energy, music, and excitement all weekend. But navigating the city and the island-based Circuit Gilles Villeneuve takes a bit of strategy. Here’s how to do it like a pro:

How do I get to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve by subway (metro)? The Montreal Metro is by far the easiest way to reach the track. Hop on the Yellow Line and exit at Jean-Drapeau Station. From there, you’ll follow a scenic walking path across the island to the circuit gates. It’s efficient, quick, and avoids the traffic headaches. Metro trains run frequently all weekend.

How long does it take to walk from the metro station to the circuit gates? Expect about a 15 to 20-minute walk from Jean-Drapeau Station to the entrance gates. Wear comfortable shoes — it’s a beautiful but moderately long trek through Parc Jean-Drapeau. Some gates may be farther depending on your ticketed grandstand.

How do I get to the race by car/where can I park? Here’s the truth: Don’t drive to the track. Parking is extremely limited, and the traffic congestion can be intense. If you must drive, park in downtown Montreal and take the metro the rest of the way. That’s what the locals and experienced fans do.

How early should I get to the track? For the best experience, plan to arrive at the circuit by 9:00–10:00 AM. This gives you time to explore the Fanzones, shop for merch, grab coffee or breakfast, and avoid the heaviest foot traffic. Gates typically open early and crowds swell fast.

What’s the best way to leave the circuit after the race to avoid crowds? You can’t avoid the rush entirely, but you can beat the worst of it by leaving slightly before the podium ceremony (if you’re not committed to watching it live). Otherwise, hang back in the Fanzone or grab a bite until the crush dies down, then take the metro out with ease.
